Review who is tracked for contractor reporting

Intuit’s workflow uses Expenses & Bills and the 1099 area, with tracked and untracked contractor lists. Check the vendor record against the W-9 and payment history before adding it. A tracked checkbox is a setup choice, not a determination that every payment to that vendor is reportable.

Map accounts and separate excluded payment methods

Intuit describes selecting expense/payment accounts and mapping them to the appropriate form boxes. Its instructions exclude payments made through credit cards, debit cards and certain third-party systems from this reporting workflow. Review transaction methods as well as account totals so a payment is not reported twice.

Apply the IRS threshold and deadline

For payments made in 2026, the IRS nonemployee compensation threshold is $2,000. Form 1099-NEC is due January 31, or the next business day when the date falls on a weekend or legal holiday. Use the appropriate 2026 information-return revision rather than older software examples.

Verify filing coverage and California reporting separately

Intuit describes federal and some state filing support, with separate state filing possible. Confirm the applicable destination and retain acceptance records. California DE 542 remains a separate report with a $600 trigger and a 20-calendar-day reporting period; the federal threshold does not replace that state requirement.
