Countywide employers and nonemployer businesses

County figures: 19,144 employer establishments, including 18,095 with 1-49 employees, and 65,587 solo businesses (nonemployers), from the 2023 Census business datasets. In 2025 the county recorded 10,779 new business applications, +94% versus 2019. Applications are not a count of businesses that opened.

The research radius analysis places 27.9% of Fresno County's population within 100 miles of Atascadero. Coverage is measured using census-tract centroids, not driving distance. These business totals cover the entire county; they are not counts restricted to the radius.

Agricultural scale, construction and food service

Across Fresno County, the county-level segment counts are 1,770 construction employer establishments and 3,908 construction nonemployers; 1,730 restaurants/food-service establishments; 13 employer wineries; and 4,427 farms (USDA 2022). These categories use different datasets and should not be added together as one business total.

Population weighting produces a regional estimate of ~4,980 professional-services employer establishments and ~21,800 nonemployers. The estimate spans the research radius and is not a Fresno-only count.
