Tips and overtime reporting on employee W-2s
The phrase “no tax on tips and overtime” can obscure the employer’s recordkeeping job. Payroll still needs to distinguish reported tips, service charges and qualified overtime so year-end forms reflect the right categories.

Separate voluntary tips from service charges
Qualified tips include voluntary cash or charged tips and tips received through sharing arrangements. Mandatory service charges added to a bill are not qualified tips. Keep those amounts separately identifiable in payroll inputs instead of combining everything collected from customers.

Map tip records to the new boxes
The 2026 W-2 instructions use box 12 code TP for total cash tips reported to the employer. Box 14b reports Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes when code TP is used. Have the payroll reviewer check the official occupation list rather than guessing from a job title.

Identify the qualified overtime portion
Code TT reports qualified overtime compensation. The W-2 instructions describe the amount above the regular rate that is required under section 7 of the FLSA, such as the additional half in time-and-a-half pay. Do not simply copy all overtime earnings into that field.

Continue ordinary payroll withholding
Overtime generally remains subject to federal income tax withholding and employee and employer Social Security and Medicare taxes. Tips generally have that treatment when the employee receives $20 or more in a month. The individual deduction is a separate question for the employee’s tax adviser; the IRS tips page describes eligibility and income limitations.

Reconcile before employee forms go out
Employee W-2 copies and the SSA filing are generally due February 1, 2027. Compare tip reports and overtime detail with payroll totals before preparing the forms. Document adjustments so the final totals can be traced to the underlying pay periods.
