Recognize when registration is triggered

EDD says an employer becomes subject when wages exceed $100 in a calendar quarter and must register within 15 days of becoming subject. Identify the wage history before setting the registration timeline. Keep the triggering payroll records with the application details for later reference.

Preserve the assigned payroll tax account number

EDD registration results in an eight-digit employer payroll tax account number used on deposits, returns and correspondence. Confirm it against the agency record before entering it in payroll software. Keep business identity information consistent across the account, payroll file and submitted reports.

Choose the right enrollment role

EDD distinguishes employer enrollment from Representative enrollment for people managing another party’s account, including bookkeepers and employees performing account administration. Use the appropriate access role and retain authorization records. e-Services supports deposits, returns, adjustments and other account tasks once access is established.

Build the post-registration checklist

EDD describes new-hire reporting, employee notices, deposits and quarterly DE 9/DE 9C reports, including quarters without payroll. Assign responsibility for each task and retain confirmations. Buying a business introduces separate registration and liability questions, so bring the transaction details to your advisers before reusing an existing account.
