California contractor license bonds and renewal records
A contractor license bond has its own paperwork and renewal cycle. Keep the bond record connected to the CSLB license without assuming that paying a license renewal also renews the bond.

Identify the bond required for an active license
CSLB requires a Contractor’s Bond before issuing an active license, reactivating an inactive license or renewing an active license. The contractor license bond increased to $25,000 on January 1, 2023. The bond benefits consumers harmed by construction or license-law violations and employees owed wages. The bond amount is not a quoted premium.

Match the surety document to CSLB records
The bond must come from a surety licensed through the California Department of Insurance and match the business name and license number exactly. CSLB requires the approved form, the surety attorney-in-fact’s signature and receipt at headquarters within 90 days of the effective date. Compare the filed document with the entity record before archiving it.

Check whether the qualifier needs a separate bond
CSLB requires a Bond of Qualifying Individual for a Responsible Managing Employee, or a Responsible Managing Officer owning less than 10% of voting stock. Keep the qualifier’s role and ownership information with the license file. Ask the licensing adviser to review a change in personnel or ownership instead of assuming the existing bond remains sufficient.

Track cancellation independently of renewal
CSLB cancels a license bond 30 days after receiving the surety’s cancellation notice; without reinstatement or replacement during that period, the license is suspended. Bond and license renewals usually follow different cycles. CSLB advises arranging a replacement four weeks before expiration and matching effective dates to avoid a gap.

File coverage evidence alongside the bond confirmation
Active licensees must also file workers’ compensation coverage or an applicable exemption. CSLB lists concrete, HVAC, asbestos abatement, roofing and tree service classifications that need coverage even without employees. Keep the certificate, exemption status where applicable, bond confirmation and renewal correspondence together, with current requirements checked against CSLB.
