Choose the Atascadero application for your location
Atascadero separates home occupation, commercial and out-of-town applications. Its categories include businesses operating from residential property, commercial locations and contractors coming from outside the city. Describe how and where the business actually operates before choosing a form. Do not use a neighboring city’s application as a substitute.
Collect the attachments before submitting
The city asks for identification or a CSLB pocket card. Applications for businesses inside city limits require original wet signatures or Qualified Electronic Signatures, and incomplete applications are not accepted. Applicable businesses also need a county health permit. New commercial businesses and changes of commercial location inside city limits require an inspection and a site plan.
Read the local fees as separate charges
Atascadero’s fee sheet dated July 13, 2026 lists an application fee of $98, zoning clearance of $92, business license inspection of $207 and an ADA fee of $4. These are Atascadero examples only, not statewide charges or a universal total. Which charges apply depends on the application.

Distinguish license tax from employee fees
The Atascadero sheet lists license tax of $25 for non-contractor home occupations, $50 for commercial businesses, out-of-town vendors and one-job-only contractors, and $75 for contractors. Employee fees are $10 per full-time employee and $5 per part-time employee. The sheet doubles these license taxes and employee fees in the Downtown Business Improvement Area. Check your own city if your operation is elsewhere.

Keep the approval and payment trail in the books
Atascadero accepts applications by appointment at 6500 Palma Avenue or by email at businesslicense@atascadero.org. Save the submitted application, city correspondence, approval and payment receipt together. A practical bookkeeping file should distinguish the business location, license period and charge paid so a renewal is easy to trace.
