Bookkeeper, accountant or CPA: choosing support
Choose financial help by the work that needs doing and the credentials it requires. Routine records, management reporting and tax advice can involve different people who share a clear handoff rather than duplicate each other’s work.

Name the work before choosing a title
As a practical division of responsibilities, bookkeeping covers organizing transactions, reconciling accounts and maintaining the records behind reports. Describe the problem in concrete terms: missing statements, unexplained balances, payroll questions or a return deadline. That makes it easier to scope the help needed.
Understand what a CPA credential signals
The IRS describes CPAs as state-licensed professionals who have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and meet ethics and continuing-education requirements. A bookkeeping engagement does not itself establish that credential. Ask which professional will handle a question requiring licensed expertise.

Verify a professional’s license
California’s Board of Accountancy provides a consumer license-verification tool and enforcement information. Use it when checking someone who identifies as a CPA. Keep engagement letters and the agreed division of work alongside the business’s financial administration records.
Separate records support from IRS representation
The IRS gives enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys unlimited representation rights before it. Do not assume the person reconciling your books will also represent you in a tax matter. Identify the appropriate adviser early when an issue extends beyond routine bookkeeping.

Make the bookkeeping handoff useful
The IRS identifies financial statements and business monitoring as reasons to maintain good records. A practical CPA handoff includes reconciled reports, supporting schedules and a list of unresolved questions. Tidwell’s role is bookkeeping, payroll and certified payroll support, working with the client’s CPA on income tax matters.
